When it comes to Kindle, latest version is called the Kindle 3. Kindle 3 is lighter, faster, thinner and smaller than the versions before. Most users preferred this version of Kindle to the prior versions. Main attraction to Kindle 3 was its high contrast display. Although it is still a black and white device, you will be able to see the characters much sharper (50%) than the other versions. Shades of gray will give you a better reading experience. In addition, Kindle 3 is less expensive. WiFi version is prices just at $139, making it one of the most cost competitive eBook readers of its kind. If you live in US, there is a special advertising supported version of Kindle where you will see some advertisements in the form of screen servers when you do not read. Amazon has specially stated these advertisement will not distract the reading experience. This special version is $25 less expensive to the WiFi version.
If you like the full freedom and do not want to look for WiFi hotspots to download new books, then you have the choice of Kindle WiFi+3G. This will work either with WiFi or on 3G connections and you will get the full freedom. But this is little expensive though. This version will cost you $189. 3G services are supported for over 100 countries, so this is a true travelers kind of a reader.
Among the negatives of these devices are its inability to display colors and relative high cost of the device. But you will see a long term benefit as Kindle version of the book is less expensive than the printed versions. And you will save some money over the transportation charges. For me, still Kindle is a good investment.
